Chinese co to build hydro-power plants in Honduras

The Honduran government and Chinese company Sinohydro have signed an agreement to begin construction next year of three dams on the Patuca river to generate electricity up to 524 MW.

The Honduran president's office did not indicate the cost of the dams but said that Sinohydro will fund the project with loans from Chinese financial institutions.

Karzai called on Taliban to join peace talks
Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Friday called on the leader of the Taliban to stop fighting and join peace talks to end Afghanistan's long war.
 
Karzai also called on the Western countries, the United States and NATO which now have 150,000 troops in the country, to focus on insurgent sanctuaries over the border in Pakistan rather than fighting in Afghan villages.

Congo suspends blood coltan mining

The Democratic Republic of Congo has decided to suspend mining in three provinces in the eastern part of the country.

On Wednesday, Congolese President Joseph Kabila ordered a suspension in mining in the war-torn provinces of Nord Kivu, Sud Kivu, and Maniema, AP reported. 

"The head of state has taken the decision to suspend mining in the three provinces," Nord Kivu Province Mining Minister D'Assise Masika told AFP on Friday.

16 injured in pipeline blast in NE Iran

A section of an Iranian gas pipeline has exploded near the northeastern city of Mashhad, Khorasan Razavi province, injuring at least 16 people.

Iran Gas Engineering and Development Company Director Alireza Gharibi told IRNA late on Friday afternoon that the blast occurred in the Mazdavand region, 65 kilometers from Mashhad, when an excavator mistakenly struck the pipeline transporting gas from the Khangiran refinery in Sarakhs to Mashhad.

US, Iraq sign deal to settle Saddam-era claims

BAGHDAD — Iraq has agreed to pay $400 million to Americans who say they were abused by Saddam Hussein's regime, U.S. and Iraqi officials said Friday.

The agreement, recently signed by U.S. and Iraqi officials, represents a significant step forward for Iraq and could bring an end to years of legal battles by Americans who claim to have been tortured or traumatized under Saddam's regime.
