German town yields Persian coins

German town yields Persian coins
German archeologists have discovered 1,200-year-old silver coins which they believe were minted in modern day Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and northern Africa.

A team of volunteers working with regional authorities and the University of Greifswald found 82 coin fragments and coins, the oldest of which dates back to the year 610 and the most recent one to approximately 820 CE.

Colombia: Edward Nino Hernandez is in many ways a typical 24-year-old Colombian male. He loves to dance reggaeton, dreams of owning a car — preferably a Mercedes and wants to see the world. 

Top on his list of people he would like to meet are Jackie Chan, Sylvester Stallone and former Colombian President Alvaro Uribe. 

What sets Nino (pronounced NEE-nyoh) apart is his size.

HONG KONG: The vaccine used to contain the recent swine flu pandemic was effective, but health authorities will need to ramp up the speed and volume of production during the next global outbreak, a World Health Organization official said Monday.

The WHO declared last month that the swine flu pandemic that started in June 2009 was over, after it killed about 18,600 people worldwide, far less than the worse-case scenarios in which authorities said millions could die.

When Hema Eswaran learnt of her second pregnancy, doctors at Voluntary Health Services, Taramani, advised tests to rule out the possibility of her child inheriting thalassemia.

Her first child Rahul, 12, was lucky as his brother was born negative for the condition and could donate bone marrow to cure his older brother who had thalassemia. Rahul's surgery cost the family Rs.8 lakh, of which Rs.1.5 lakh came from the Kalaignar health insurance scheme.
