In line with previous researches, a new study confirms that intense exercise lowers the risk of developing painful gallstones.

Gallstones, considered to be asymptomatic in the majority of cases, are commonly reported in one in every three women and one in every six men. The condition is more frequently seen in seniors.

Pregnancy, obesity, rapid weight loss and some medications are the main factors contributing to the disease.

According to the study published in the European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, increasing the amount of exercise done by one category can prevent 17 percent of gallstones in-need of medical treatment.

Exercise increases the blood levels of good cholesterol and improves the intestinal movements, all of which contribute to reduced cholesterol levels in the bile and a subsequently reduced risk of gallstones.

"If everyone was to achieve the impossible and do the same amount of exercise as those in the most active category, gallstones could be reduced by 70%," concluded lead researcher Paul Banim.
