KUWAIT: As a number of parliamentary candidates and women''s rights activists call for a broader and more active role for Kuwaiti women in various domains, Kuwait launched on Sunday a national campaign to support women in a number of fields, including political social and economic. The Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor announced the launch of the campaign, saying the inauguration would take place today (Monday) under the slogan; ''Woman is an Active Partner.''
"The campaign comes in line with the objectives of the department and within the framework of the government''s strategy to support empowerment of Kuwaiti women," Director of the Social Development Department at the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor Sheikha AlـAdwani told the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), adding that political, economic, legal, social, educational and cultural aspects will all be covered during the course of the campaign.
The campaign, she explained, also coincides with the upcoming 2009 parliamentary elections; as the first activity of the campaign would be the hosting of a seminar titled; ''In Order For You to be an Active Partner,'' with lectures given by Aroub AlـRefaie, and lawyer Osama AlـShaheen. The seminar will also discuss women''s experience with elections; its pros and cons and to identify opportunities for their success among other issues. Other seminars would also be held throughout the various governorates in Kuwait, with an average of one seminar every three days.
Former parliamentary contender Nabila AlـAnjeri has expressed hope that women will finally make their eagerly anticipated entrance into the Parliament, adding that all indications point towards that direction. Commenting on a question over her decision not to contest the upcoming elections, she explained that her decision was attributed to family and personal reasons. She added that a lack of proper preparation had equally been a contributing factor for not contesting the polls. She however affirmed her intention of contesting elections in the future. She also reiterated her unstinted support for all female candidates, saying Kuwait is inundated with competent women.
The former candidate affirmed that Kuwait was in a dire need of capable parliamentarians that could move the country forward, and hoped that controversial parliamentarians would be thrown out of office in the upcoming elections. Several other candidates contesting the 2009 parliamentary elections urged the government to seriously consider allocating women a quota of seats in the upcoming Parliament. Candidate from the Third Constituency Salem Jawad expressed support over the notion of the quota system, in which a specific number of seats would be allocated to women to gain access to Parliament.
