Apostolic Carmel Vision of Education
History
Thirty six years have sped by since Carmel School, took root on Kuwait soil. It was on March 27, 1969 that the pioneering band of four sisters of the Apostolic Carmel, - Srs. Fridolin, Irmina, Amelle and Felicita, Landed in Kuwait at the pressing invitation of the Indian expatriates in Kuwait and specially of the former Bishop of Kuwait - Magr. Victor Sanmiguel O.C.D. On April 8, 1969, the School made its debut on the educational platform, with just four students on roll, in a little apartment at Shamiya, sponsored by Mr. Abdul Aziz Saleh Mutawa, a prominent Kuwaiti business man. However the number on roll began steadily increasing and so the school was shifted to a larger apartment in Dasman on September 19, 1969. Since the strength of the school had touched 350, three more sisters arrived from India, and on October 10, of the same year, the School had begun functioning as a regular Primary School, with the lower and upper Kindergarten classes, as well as classes I - IV. Besides, a separate English class was run for the Czech community, until their own School was opened.
On March 17, 1970 the untiring efforts of the school sponsor, Mr. Abdul A. S. Mutawa, made it possible for the School to secure the written official permission from the Kuwait Ministry of Education, to run the School. Just 6 months later, on September 15, 1970 Carmel School obtained the recognition from the Ministry of Education . It was now in a position to throw open its doors to Students of all Creeds, who were ready to follow the Indian curriculum. This led to a further rise in the strength of the school, which called for a more spacious building. Such a building was available, just across the road and soon the School was shifted there.
The Apostolic Carmel Congregation which runs the Carmel School Kuwait, celebrated the Centenary of its foundation in Mangalore, India, on November 19, 1970. In order to share in the joy of this celebration, a function was held to mark this event on the visit of Mother Theodosia, the Superior General of the Congregation. For the first time the general pubic was acquainted with the educational goals of our Institution and were proud to get their children educated in our School. Seeing the numbers on roll swelling day by day Mr. Abdul Aziz, the Sponsor was eager to construct a school building . In 1972 , class VIII was opened and the new syllabus of C.B.S.E., Delhi was introduced . After the preliminary inspection, the school was recognised by the Delhi board and in 1973, affiliated to the C.B.S.E.
The school continued developing fast. In 1973, the Annual Prize distribution celebration was presided over by H. E. Sheikh Abdulla Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, special Councillor to H. H. the Amir. In April, 1974, the Kuwait Ministry of Education sanctioned the opening of Class X . Class XI was formally opened in September 1975. The Ist batch of boys and girls of class XI who appeared for the A.I.H.S.E. did wonderfully well in their exams. In March 1977, the boys section was closed down and nearly 200 boys went over to New Indian School.
On April 10, 1979 a formal contract was signed with three business partners - Mr. Yacoub Yousuf Al-Jouan, of Omran Trading Corporation, Mr. Abdulrahim Abdulkhedir and Mr. Ahmed A. Al-Sarraf - for a large school building, Carmel School could, at last , be proud of having a permanent School building with the required facilities for about 2500 students. The Chairman of C.B.S.E., Delhi and the Indian Ambassador to Kuwait visited the School and were pleased to see the high academic and moral standards maintained in the school . At an Art Exhibition held to mark the International year of the Child, Carmel School was considered by the Kuwait Education ministry, to be one of the 5 best schools among all the foreign schools. A trophy and a Certificate of Merit were awarded to the school.
Mr. Hamad Al-Ateeqy
In 1979, Mr. Hamad Al-Ateeqy, took over the sponsorship of the School at our request and till the present day, he has taken keen interest in the development of the School.
Carmel School, Kuwait suffered a terrible setback during the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. The school building which was occupied by the Iraqi army, was left totally devoid of all its belongings, the damage done to the School was colossal. Most of the equipment was either robbed or destroyed while the Sisters were away in the India during the occupation. However, after the liberation of Kuwait, and at the insistence of prominent Indians in Kuwait, the Sisters were invited back to restart the school. We would like to place on record the encouragement and the help rendered by our sponsor Mr. Hamad Al-Ateeqy, the Charge d'Affairs of the Indian Embassy, The Bishop of Kuwait and many well-wishers, without whose help we would not have been able to take the Herculean task of rebuilding the School. It was mainly faith in God that kept us going, as we restarted the School in August 1991, with just 250 students on roll, amidst the destruction which awaited us at every corner.
The School
We are happy to offer our Students adequate facilities, a well equipped Library, Computer, Physics, Chemistry, Biology laboratory and a Sports room with ample sports materials for the physical development of students. Neither is the Moral and Spiritual development neglected. Through regular Moral science classes, occasional Orientation, Counseling sessions, and other talks, we try to instill in our students respect for all religions, a love for lasting values and a service - oriented life. In this way, we seek the all round development of our students which the main aim of the education imparted by Carmel School.
